Final reflection – The magic of understanding

In the final project of the year, my group and I did The Little Prince. I chose four scenes from the book that can show the main ideas of the writer of the book. The little prince is a comic book tells a fairy tale, but maybe the fairy tales for adults. It taught me that I needed to look at the world through my heart that eyes sometimes lies. In this book, the Little Prince leaves his rose because he thinks the rose doesn’t like him and met the king, and the fox. Finally, he goes back his planet because he finally understands the reasons that the rose has been “mean” to him.

In the scene, there are four characters. The Little Prince is a learner, that he finally understands the rose’s love and goes back to her. The Rose was suit to be a person, who is unreasonable but all she wants is the Little Prince’s love. The King seemed to be a guider that the Little Prince feels the life of an adult and the king led the little prince to the earth.

I played the fox in this scene, and I see her as a teacher. The fox loves the Little Prince so much that she teaches him how to tame her. The fox teaches me that love is letting him free that she seems sad, but she still let the Little Prince leaves. She’s even the one who tells the Little Prince how to understand his love to the rose. I feel like in the love of two, she is great and selfless. Because of the love of the Little Prince, she has to push him to another person’s life with her blooding heart.

I tried so hard to act this character well, because I like her so much. I don’t want to ruin this character. When I first saw the little prince in the scene, I was happy and I asked the Little Prince to tame me. I held my hands up when I said, “it will be as if the sun came to shine my life”. I spoke a little bit faster when he said he has other things to do. I lowered my voice and showed my fear when I talked about the hunters. Then, when the Little Prince said that he needed to go, there’s a change of emotion. I was shy and happy when he tames me, but I suddenly became sad. However, I didn’t yell at him since the fox is always soft, but I started to quiver. I gently told the lover of the fox that his true love is the rose. I truly feel sad about the fox that she said, “it is the time you have wasted for your rose that makes your rose so important.” But indeed, the Little Prince has also wasted time for the fox. It’s maybe the fox that doesn’t have her love that made me love her so much. Anyway, I’m happy that I didn’t ruin the character.

For the staging, the first scene and the forth scene has some stub to be the volcano and the rose is in the middle. The second scene has a desk in the middle and two chairs that the King can sit at. The third scene has background of some herbs and the fox first hided behind. There are three series of music in the middle of the scenes that makes it funny. Overall, the video is great, and I feel like it’s the best one of the year!

My last project of the junior year

For the final project, my group and I chose to do The Little Prince and we have just filmed for the first draft. Everything is going well that we all have our scenes set up and I remembered all my lines even though there are some small problems. In this year of having the class, I have been a priest, Romeo, a god, a young lady and finally, a fox. Those are different characters that people can see from me and I saw lots of my improvements.

I improved a lot as an individual. In the first draft video that we took on Tuesday, I saw that I was confident, and I showed the emotion of the fox that was kind and eager for a love. I showed her helpless while the Little Prince was going to leave. Also, I showed her personality of a dreamer that she wished to be tamed by the Little Prince. To look back to the past scenes that I have did, it so amazing to tell that I can even been improved this much. I became less stiff, less shy and a lot more open. It’s a great experience, indeed. For what I need to improve, I feel like I speak too fast, still, and I also have some pronunciation issues for some words that I’m not so familiar with.

For my group, they helped me a lot, especially Sofia. Since we performed a scene Romeo and Juliet in the written coursework, she started to help me with putting more emotion in characters. Finally, when we acted this scene, I truly became the special, kind and nice fox. I really have to thank her that she used her special emotion to bring my emotion of the understanding of the characters out. My other group mates also showed me different kind of acting and I think we all did a good job overall.

The other groups are also doing very well done. For James and Julie’s scene, it really amazed me. It’s neither fancy nor fantastic, but it’s very charming and warm. The use of flashback didn’t make me any confusion but it was so good that I remember all the plots and the emotion that showed from them. It’s not very long, but every single detail made the whole scene fulfilled and structured well. I really should learn how could they show their emotion spontaneously, even like they were just those two figures. For the other group, the three men did the scene from the slum dog millionaire. They also used a lot of flashback, and the plot is intensive and attractive. The only problem is that I feel like there isn’t enough connection between the flash back and the questions from the show. Thus, I feel like there should be some kind of lines that can kind of explain the questions in the flashback so it’s clearer.

Lastly, I’m pretty satisfied to see my improvement in the final project of this class. I would try my best to remember all my lines well, I will speak slower, and I will make my pronunciation clearer.

Tragedy tomorrow, comedy tonight

The spring theatre was amazing this year! Well, it’s not as long as Romeo and Juliet nor it’s not as wonderful as those classics, but, it’s very close to our lives. I have never seen a show that’s so close to my daily life and was direct by those people I saw in my everyday life. It might not be the best show, but it’s the most impressive one that I can understand every single of them and easily feel the point of those jokes. Thus, I love this show!

The others plays in the black box theatre these years are also amazing and the plots are even better than those ones, but those series of pieces can attract me easily, especially the one of our school morning meeting. I can recognize every single teacher in the stage that acted by student, and those fun parts that showed each teacher’s habit. When “Ms. Anderson” said her joke, I started to laugh spontaneously; When “Ms. Minahan” put her dog down, I suddenly feel the dog’s bark every night after lights out; When “Mr. McBreen” asked people to be in dress code, I would absolutely realize his son’s tragedy experience on that. It’s just too close to my life that I see those everyday, and it made me feel comfortable by recognize my daily life.

Otherwise, the songs were also good to listen. The girls sang very well and my mind was still surrounded by the melody of “John Jiang, the Latte boy”. Well, that’s brainwashing! Also, the part that man acted as women was surprising. Well, I would describe those boys as… um… pretty cute… maybe. It did attract a lot attention through the audience, so that’s a successful action.

Overall, I like the comedy pieces that it brought me so much fun. I wish to see similar things and good work in next year’s show as well!

My final project proceeding

For the final project, my group is going to do the Little Prince, which is the story of the Little Prince that most children have read in their childhood. It’s actually a fairy tale for adults, so that I understand more about the story every time that I read it.

In this week, we were writing scripts and talking about the staging of our scene. Everything is going through well. Eric is going to be the Little Prince since he’s the only male in our group and many of us already tried the frustrated process to showing love to a girl… Well, I still feel bad to be the fox that I would ask the little Prince to “tame” me, but at least it’s better than falling love with a rose and tame a fox >_<. As I already said, I’m going to act the fox and the two more characters are the rose and the king. The rose will be beautiful and pride while the King has some bad characteristics but being a not bad person.

For now, we decided to stage the setting in different planets with the rose, volcano in the first scene, a background of planet in the second scene, and a rose garden in the third scene. For the scripts, I did follow the plots in the original book but cut and changed some scene. For example, the King, the geographer, the businessman and other characters are all combined to the King. Those characteristics of him, arrogant, greedy, and pride are all combined in his speaking. I feel like it would be a main difference that people can understand all the lessons from those characters in one scene.

Also, the characters such as the rose and the fox are been humanized and they were suited to be people. I feel like this would be a good experience to act the scene that I knew well since I was young. Wish everything would be successful.

Final project proposal

For the final project, I want to choose a passage from, Anne of the Green Gables, written by Lucy Maud Montgomery. Anne of Green Gables is actually a children’s book, but it’s so attractive that I even cannot drive my eyes of it right now, when I’m already 17. It tells a story of a little girl called Anne that’s an orphan adopted by a brother and sister. They wanted to adopt a boy actually, but their fate leads them to the little girl and their lives became different. It’s a great novel that it’s too warm. It including love and friendship a lot in this book and it’s also funny due to the strange characteristic of the little girl. I want to choose a passage from this book because it’s my great memory of childhood and it would be a fun experience to feel those clear characters in this book.

Even though this book is a children’s book, I feel like the writer seen the main characters as an adult that she used the way of an adult to think. I want to chose the first few chapters of the book to stage because it’s pretty dramatic. Anne, a girl with strange and romantic thinking, has been sent to Matthew and Marilla’s home even though they actually want a boy to support their works. Anne was talkative, so that her personality seems truly clear. She can highlight the scene and make it fun to read. Matthew is the elder brother who’s full of sympathy and he seems very nice. Marilla is the sister and she seemed serious, old- fashioned and upright. When they struggled about if Anne should stay or leave, it would be really interesting to see.

This part of the book can teach students how to create a person’s personality through acting as them, and it can make us to understand the real thinking of those characters as well. Also, the funny characters would make the passage more interesting to act and discuss. This scene can show the struggle between people and something that can change people’s mind.

For the setting of the scene, I want there to be two settings. The first one should be the home of Marilla and Mathew that they can argue in and to get Anne in. The other scene should be Mathew and Anne’s journey back to home. Through the journey, due to the talkative personality of Anne, Matthew would have a more clear understanding of Anne and it would lead him to think about keeping her in their home. For Marilla, she would be stubborn but she would finally understand Anne and wants to keep her after talking to each other about their experience together.

I want the scene to be warm, with bright light effects and some slow music. When Anne uses her imaginary to talk about things that she wishes, there would be sounds that are unrealistic.

Overall, I would like to state a scene that’s attractive, as the first impression that this book gave me.
